My Approach to Event Photography: Sustainable Growth Lecture
As an event photographer, I recently had the pleasure of covering the “Sustainable Growth” inaugural lecture by Bina Mehta MBE at Bayes Business School. Here’s an inside look at my approach to capturing this special event:

Pre-Event Preparation
Normally I would arrive early to scout the location, but since I was familiar with it, I checked it off the list. I did notice that the venue updated the lighting in the auditorium, so a few test shots were necessary to make sure the lighting is consistent or if external flash is required. Staff and technicians usually are happy to help.

I have identified key photo locations and coordinated with the event organiser on latest schedule changes and specific shots requirements. We agreed that the group photo will take place at 6:15 pm outside the auditorium against a curved collapsible Bayes Business School branded background.

During the Lecture
- I used a telephoto lens, 70-200mm, to capture engaging shots of Bina, the main speaker, using a flash pointing to one side to minimise distractions and improve photo quality by keeping ISO small to around 400.
- I kept moving discreetly around the auditorium for varied angles alternating from landscape to portrait view so the final photos can be used easily in different layout configurations for print and for web.
- I also focused on audience reactions during the presentation and Q&A to add human interest and facilitate storytelling.

Post-Lecture Reception
- Switched to a wide-angle lens for environmental shots such as a wide-angle view of the auditorium
- Captured candid interactions over food and drinks
- Looked for small moments that told the story of the event

Post-Processing
- I culled photos, selecting the best 167 images out of 204. Some photos were culled in camera so probably around 250 photos were taken.
- I edited for consistent style and feel across the set, adjusting the White Balance, Exposure, Contrast, Highlight, and Shadow. Some photos were cropped for greater impact.
- Once the edits were done preview the set, export as high resolution and web version and delivered final images within 24 hours. I only delivered the high-resolution photos to avoid confusion, but if required the low-resolution version is quickly available.
The key was balancing formal shots of the lecture with more casual, candid moments from the reception. By varying my approach, I was able to provide a comprehensive visual story of this important inaugural event.
